Hand in ToW 1 (1–2 pages, MLA format). Discuss findings. Situate OE genre in logic of course’s structure and hand out formal OE assignment. Introduce dailyoped.com, www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate, and ozy.com as op-ed resources.

 

HWK.: Rd. intro. and Ch. 1-3 in TSIS. Skim formal OE assignment. Brainstorm current pop issues of interest. Come to class prepared to discuss how they illustrate the genre in terms of the assignment overview.

 

 

 

Review use of templates in TSIS. Informal course evaluation. Burkean parlor. In-class drafting: given your topic(s) of interest, who is your parlor? How should you address them?

 

HWK.: Rd. at least three op-eds a day over break. Come to class with three printed op-eds on topics that interest you, pop or otherwise. Brainstorm op-ed topic for your essay. Skim “INVENTION: Op-eds, Editorials, and Front-Page News” (on D2L).
