Disability is not a bad word! Improving Language for an Inclusive Campus

Disability is not a bad word! Improving Language for an Inclusive Campus In-Person

Join Assistant Professor Katie Manwiller to discuss the importance of inclusive language in building disability community on our campus. Accessibility goes beyond ADA compliance to include the way disability is culturally understood and represented. It also means ensuring campus is inclusive for not only students but also employees with disabilities. Using a Critical Disability Studies framework, Professor Manwiller will explore the historical context of disability in the US and the importance of language in disability representation. She will give practical examples of how to incorporate inclusive language for faculty, staff, and students. Attendees will work in small breakout groups to discuss how disability language is used in their work and ways we can advocate for greater inclusion across campus.
